Emergency Plumbing Repairs: When You Can’t Wait

Dripping faucets, a single clogged drain, a toilet that periodically runs, there are a lot of plumbing issues that don’t require immediate attention. When you see visible flooding or water movement across a ceiling, it’s clear you’re dealing with an emergency.

Other common problems that call for same-day repair include:

  • Burst or actively leaking pipes
  • Sewage backup
  • Continuously overflowing toilets or other fixtures that cannot be shut off
  • Leaking water near electrical outlets or appliances
  • Gas or sewage odors detected near plumbing fixtures
  • Flooding or leaking water heaters
  • Complete loss of water or water pressure
  • A damaged main water line
  • A drain backup affecting several fixtures

What to Do Before Your Emergency Plumber Arrives

If you’ve called for an emergency repair (and even before you call), you can take steps to help mitigate the damages in your home or business. Your safety is of the utmost importance, only do the following when you can safely.

1

Stop the flow of water.

For specific fixtures, you can use local shut off valves. To halt the water flow for large-scale leaks or burst pipes, turn off the main water supply. It may be located in a basement, utility room, garage, or outside by the water meter.
2

Stop using plumbing.

If you’re experiencing a sewer backup or mainline leak, stop taps or toilets.
3

Avoid electrical hazards.

If you have water near electrical outlets or features, avoid making contact with the water, affected appliances, or electrical switches. If water is encroaching on your electrical panel or outlets, shut off the main power at the breaker but only if you can do so safely.
4

Contain the damage.

As safety permits, move belongings and furnishings away from the water and its path and use absorbent items, such as mops and towels, with wet or shop vacuums to soak up excess water to keep it out of floorboards and drywall.
5

Document the damage.

Take photos and video of the damage to support any insurance claims you may need to file.
